Car production could fall 35 percent in Thailand

Vehicle production in Thailand could fall as much as 35 percent next year if the global economy continues to worsen, a leading auto institute said Saturday.

Thailand is a major production and export hub for pickup trucks made by General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp., Isuzu Motors Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. _ all suffering in the midst of a global downturn.

Wallop Tiasiri, director of the Thailand Automotive Institute, estimated the decline in Thailand would more likely be about 15 percent. But he said a gloomier economic outlook in the United States and Europe could result in a production drop of 35 percent and the loss of 45,000 jobs.

Dollar moves within tight range in thin trading

In light holiday trading, the dollar dipped against the euro, but edged higher against the yen and pound Friday.

The 15-nation euro rose to $1.4067 in late New York trading Friday from $1.3999 late Wednesday, while the British pound slipped to $1.4677 from $1.4752.

The dollar also rose to 90.58 Japanese yen Friday from 90.39 yen late Wednesday ahead of the Christmas holiday.

With a lack of economic reports or government financing actions to direct trading, the greenback moved within tight ranges against the major currencies.

Stocks up after GMAC lifeline, dip in retail sales

Wall Street is up in light post-holiday trading Friday, but still cautious about embarking on a year-end rally after dreary readings on holiday spending.

Investors did get a some good news on Christmas Eve, when the Federal Reserve allowed GMAC Financial Services _ the finance arm of struggling Detroit automaker General Motors Corp. _ to become a bank holding company. It now qualifies for the government's $700 billion rescue fund.

But less reassuring was a decline in holiday sales. According to SpendingPulse, seasonal retail sales dropped between 5.5 percent and 8 percent compared with last year.

Some stations to reach fewer viewers with digital

Nearly a fifth of the nation's full-power television stations will no longer reach at least 2 percent of viewers now covered by their existing analog signals after they switch to digital broadcasts in February, federal regulators say.

The Federal Communications Commission report comes amid mounting concerns that some consumers who rely on analog-only television sets could lose some or all over-the-air broadcast channels following the Feb. 17 digital transition even if they have purchased and hooked up digital converter boxes.
